EXP1 Final Submission - (25/03)

EXPERIMENT ONE - THE 'DATUM'

1). THREE IMAGES AND CLIENT WORDS

This is one of my previous works, a fictional map I drew in 2016 for a friend who was writing a fantasy novel. I used 0.4mm Artline pen on grid paper (which in hindsight was a mistake, as it made it hard to remove the grid lines after I scanned it in.) I used different weights on each line to represent its importance - thick for coastlines, thin for roads and rivers, etc.

The Chrysler Building in Manhattan, New York is, in my opinion, one of the best examples of 20th century Art-Deco architecture in the world. It's striking steel and brick facade stands out as an icon among the Midtown skyline. I had the privilege of visiting the Chrysler building in person in 2014 for a music tour and was blown away by the amount of detail both inside and out.

I took this photo earlier this year on a trip to Boston and Chicago. This panorama taken from the top of the Prudential Tower shows the north side of Boston, with the Back Bay area in the foreground and the MIT campus across the Charles River. This was taken using the panorama feature on an iPhone 6.

Below are the two sketches I used as inspiration for the draft and final model.

2A). THE FIRST MODEL

The model below was essentially my first time using Sketchup, and as a result its relatively simple. However, the process of creating it introduced me to the various tools and plugins Sketchup has to offer. It's based on Sketch No.4 (above).

3). STAIRS

STUDIO (17/03) - Model 2 Update

This is an unfinished model, but the form is starting to take shape. Haven't added the stairs yet, but the next update will have a split 'shop-style' stair case up to the main entry and a lightweight set of spiralling stairs up to the top floor.
Also yet to be included is the ground plane.
